Alex Vias is an Associate Professor in the Geography Department, and the Coordinator of the Urban and Community Studies Program in Storrs. In his research he brings an extensive background in the analysis and modeling of economic and population change, especially migration, using a number of statistical and geo-spatial tools, for both urban and rural areas. This background was developed from work at the Census Bureau, the University of Arizona (Ph.D. in economic/population geography), and specialized workshops on spatial analysis in the social sciences at the University of California—Santa Barbara, and the University of New Brunswick, Canada. Over the past few years he has published a number of articles in leading peer-reviewed journals that touch on interstate migration, and the development of micropolitan areas. To finance his research, he has won grants from the USDA. the CT Department of Public Health, and the NSF, and currently receives funding through the USDA to participate in a Multistate Research Project (W1001). Dr. Vias' current and future research projects include analysis of micropolitan areas of the US, and the nature of health disparities in Connecticut's communities.
